Alice Odeh (nee Sakhel), 85, passed away on November 29. Alice had the blessed distinction of being born in Bethlehem, Palestine on Christmas Day, 1932. Eventually, she moved to Amman, Jordan with her family. As a young woman, she married Emil Odeh, a dashing young man with whom she was friends since childhood. They both wound up working together at the U.S. Embassy in Amman. Alice and Emil had three adoring children-Shereen Combs (Aaron Aguilar), Sammy Odeh (Kris), and Ranya Dietzen (Doug). They moved to the U.S. in 1972 and settled on the North Side of Chicago in St. Henry’s parish. Alice worked for 20 years at S&C Electric Company and made many good, lifelong friends. Sadly, Emil passed away at too young of an age in 1989. Alice bravely continued on to raise her family with the support of her mother Victoria, brother Lutfi, and sisters Hilda and Nina. In 2005, Alice was blessed to have a dear friend, Jim Zakrzewski, reenter her life. Jim, who had also lost his loving spouse, swept Alice off her feet and they were married in February 2007 at Queen of All Saints. With Jim in her life, Alice was rejuvenated. As quickly as Jim entered Alice’s life, he entered her heart as well as the hearts of all Alice’s family.

Jim was next to Alice as she passed peacefully into God’s hands. Her grandchildren Christine, Brandon, Jessica and Nick also gathered around her lovingly. Nick Odeh and his bride, Danielle were there in spirit. Many other of Alice’s and Jim’s family members including her step-daughter Cindy (Mike) and granddaughters Gia (Joe) and Dina (Eli) and friends were present during Alice’s final hours, a testimony to the love and care she gave to all who entered her life. Alice is survived by many nieces and nephews who have loved her through their life as a mother and a Teta.
