Richard D. Smith, “Dick”, passed away in his sleep, Saturday, July 29, 2017.

He was born May 20, 1927 to the late William C. Smith and Agnes M. Smith in Chicago, IL.

Dick served in the Marine Corps with occupation forces in China during WWII. He married Elizabeth “Betty” Hargett in 1953. He was employed as an Air Traffic Controller and salesman.

Dick was an avid reader and history buff. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren. He was active in the Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder and Sunday School Teacher.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Hargett Smith; one daughter, Leslie DeBaun, of Rougemont, NC; three sons, Richard Smith of Wilmington, NC, Bill Smith of Goldsboro, NC and Stephen Smith of Locust, NC; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 5, at 10:30 AM at Cape Fear Presbyterian Church, 2606 Newkirk Avenue, Wilmington, NC.

The family would like to thank Sherwood Manor and their staff for their excellent TLC. Memorial may be made to Sherwood Manor Assisted Living, 1605 Robinhood Road, Wilmington, NC 28401.
