Schaumburg: Rina (Renee) Coolman (nee Bourgoin), 76, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2017 at Friendship Village in Schaumburg after suffering from a stroke. Rina was born on December 10, 1940 in Drummond, New Brunswick, one of eight girls born to Conde and Louise (Thibodeau) Bourgoin. She was a strong, determined and brave woman who raised her four young children after the early death of her husband, Richard (Jay) Coolman in 1966. Beginning in 1969, Rina owned and operated The Barn Antiques in Wells, Maine and two guesthouses, Beachcrest Guests and Fieldstone, in Ogunquit, Maine. In 1986, she chased the sun and warmth and owned and operated two hotels, Villa Boheme and Hotel Delecias, in Culebra and Fajardo, Puerto Rico. Over the years she met many interesting guests whose stories she would say, “could certainly fill a book!” Her children fondly remember guests in Ogunquit who would come and stay year after year who were like family.
In 2011, Rina moved to Friendship Village in Schaumburg, Illinois to be closer to her daughter, son in law and three granddaughters. She loved working in the Arts & Crafts room at Friendship Village where she offered tailoring services and sewed pillows, bags, curtains and other items for residents, veterans and workers. She personally hand tied hundreds of rosaries for hospitals and veterans. In 2014, she was nominated for Volunteer of the Year in Schaumburg. Although she did not win, she considered it a great honor to be considered. Until her dying days, she was still talking about how she could help others more needy then herself.
Rina will be remembered for her love of languages (she spoke three fluently—English, French and Spanish), arts & crafts, travel, berry picking and her entrepreneurial business sense.
Rina is survived by her daughters Sandra (Mark) Jamieson and Melodie (Jay) Moroney; sons Glen (Maria) Coolman and Randy (Nancy) Coolman; loves of her life granddaughters, Victoria, Megan and Isabel Moroney; sisters Norma (the late Will) Cyr, Monique DesRosiers, Lorraine (Gerald) Carroll, Nicole Bourgoin, Thelma Cote and many dear nieces and nephews. She will also miss her dear friend of forty-five plus years Meg Kelly and her children Joshua and Molly.
Rina’s wishes were to be cremated with a family memorial to take place in Maine. Melodie will be welcoming friends and family at her home on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 beginning at 4:00 pm to celebrate her mother’s life. For information about attending the service on the 11th, please contact Melodie at 847-767-5604.
In lieu of flowers or donations Rina would love for you to spend a day in a field picking and eating fresh berries and enjoying all that life has to offer.hide
