Gerard F. “Gerry” Volenec, age 61. Beloved husband of Gail, nee Wiedlin. Loving father of Jennifer (Christopher) Smith and Emily (Benny) Boyas. Dear grandpa of Noam, Leighanna, Leighton, and Elora Smith and Madelynn, Nathan, and Kellan Boyas. Caring, fun-loving uncle of numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Robert Volenec, mother Mary Volenec, and nephew Tyler Volenec.

Gerry decided to pursue a lifelong dream in his forties and became a teacher.  He had a Master’s degree in education.  He taught at Round Lake High School, beginning with special education and transitioning to science.  He also coached many years of basketball and track.

Gerry had many interests in life.  He was an avid sports fan, and loved all his Chicago teams and Notre Dame.  He loved to garden, and created beautiful pollinator gardens at his home, which are an oasis for bees, butterflies and birds.  He loved traveling to National parks with his wife and camping and hiking throughout the country. He was a runner for over 40 years and competed in many races.  He retired at 59 and became more involved in his church, St. Theresa. He volunteered at Little Sister’s of the Poor, and worked with St. Vincent DePaul Society.  His faith was one of the most important things in his life

He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed playing with them, doing projects, goofing around and generally being silly.

Gerry loved to cook, and was a master chef.  He loved hosting Christmas dinners for family.  As the family grew, the dinners grew, and Gerry always kept everything under control.  He looked forward to the chaos every year.
