Heinrich R.W. Pergams was born January 11, 1935 in Kassel, Germany. He married the love of his life, Elfriede G. Pergams, in 1955. They immigrated to Chicago and lived for a while with Elfriede’s sister. Elfriede and Heinrich were happily married for 57 years until Elfriede passed. Early in their marriage they were beatniks: berets and bongos, poetry and Pernod. Heinrich also loved art and was an excellent oil painter.

.

Heinrich was briefly a telephone repairman, 30 years a pipefitter making industrial heat-treating furnaces, and 10 years a plant manager making rivets. Wanting to become a teacher, he went to night school at Northeastern Illinois University. Heinrich earned a BA and an MA, both in political science, specializing in modern China.

.

Heinrich loved to fish, especially at their lake house in Wisconsin. He was very fond of his dog Verdi. Heinrich loved Western movies and baseball and Johnny Cash and Elfriede’s cooking. He could fix anything, and his house and garden were always immaculate. He was dedicated to his children and grandchildren.
