Karen Mullen, nee Gross, age 64, of Palatine. Beloved wife of Tom Mullen. Loving mother of Kyle (Lauren), Kaitlyn (Abrahan Ruiz), Justine (Philmore Morrison), and Rory (Claire Palomo) Mullen. Dear grandmother of Vivienne, Lukas, and Cruz. Adored daughter of the late Elizabeth and Thomas Gross. Loving sister of Kristine (John) Minarsini, Kim (Pat) Caputo, Keith (Dona) Gross, and Karyl (Liz Allen) Gross. Dear cousin and aunt of many nieces and nephews.
To know Karen was to have been touched by her. Anointed with the epithet “Grace”, Karen pridefully strode through life on a mission to construct relationships with the tools of timely wit, unabashed laughter, and fierce support. She selflessly and unapologetically made those around her better.
Growing up, Karen was a presence to those around her. She was made from unconditional love, and her soul was filled with curiosity, determination, humor, and mischief. She honored that epithet with a devilish dynamic and fiery finesse.
Karen loved with a fierce intensity, and that earned her a second epithet among her children; “Mama Bear.” She was a protector and fierce defender to those around her. She employed all-encompassing boundless empathy with an elegant strength and a powerful whisper.
She balanced both “Grace” and “Mama Bear” with style and flair in her many roles as wife, mother, grandma, daughter, sister, and friend. We loved her and she loved us.
We thank you for whatever impact you had on Karen’s life, for you made her strong and gave her life experience. In whatever way you helped mold our Karen, we thank you – she broke the mold as her Tommy would say!
Please join us in celebrating Karen’s life and welcoming her back Home. We love you, Karen!
…also, Karen was an avid reader of the Obituary Section… so if you have made it this far, you are in great company!! We hope we did you proud with this one, Mom!
