Salvatore “Sam” Ingraffia died on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago. He was born December 29, 1939, in Chicago, to Joseph and Jean Ingraffia . Sam attended Audubon Grammar school and Lane Tech High school, graduating in 1958. On October 15, 1966 he married Catherine Cassidy, also of Chicago. Sam and Cathy have 3 sons, Joseph, James and Anthony as they continued to reside in Chicago. Sam and his brother Joe took over J & J Liquors from their father and happily ran the tavern until 1977. Sam volunteered for many years as Ditto The Clown and entertained countless children attending Moose Club events. After selling the bar, Sam worked at Sexton Foods, as a laborer for Chicago Housing Authority, and many years at Uhlich Children’s Home. Sam retired in 2010 and quickly became a full-time Grandpa – picking up the kids from school and helping them with homework. Sam rarely missed any of their events – recitals, plays and sporting events alike. From 1997 to 2013, Sam volunteered at the Field Museum providing visitors with education and tours of the Dinosaur Exhibits. He recently visited the museum as a special guest during the reintroduction of Sue the T-Rex. Sam would often visit schools to educate the classes on paleontology and many kids still remember him as “Dinosir”.

Sam and Cathy were active parishioners at Immaculate Conception and later rejoined St. Andrew Parish after retirement. Sam was a fun, generous person who made friends with everyone he met. His kindness and generosity are known throughout Chicago. He enjoyed collecting coins and stamps as well as anything else he thought someone needed. His basement and trunk were full of gifts and items to share with friends, family and even strangers.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Cathy, siblings Maria (John) Harrington of Austin, TX, Joseph of McHenry, Phyllis (George) Kafka of Chicago; sons Joseph (Sue Bova), James (Molly) both of Chicago, and Anthony (Jennifer) of Rogers, MN. Sam has seven grandchildren, Isabella, Nicholas, Louis, Andrew, Joseph, Gianna and Sam of Rogers, MN and many nieces and nephews.
