Matthew Ryan Morgan, 30, passed away on February 2, 2020. Matthew leaves behind his wife Amanda Morgan, his mother Echo Morgan (Robert Serna), sister Marley, his two fur-children Penny and Oki, and many friends and family.

Matthew was a Staff Sergeant (SSG) in the U.S. Army, enlisting in 2010. He served as an Allied Trades Specialist and Welder at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and deployed to Kandahar Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2012. In 2014, Matthew was assigned to Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan and transitioned into the Acquisitions Corps in 2018 where he helped manage contracts with vendors in the South Pacific.

Outside of the military, Matt was always known as a stand up guy. He loved Okinawa. He loved scuba diving, the ocean, traveling, welding, baseball, and supporting his wife’s passion of dragon boat racing. Most importantly he loved his wife Amanda.

Although quiet and stoic, Matt loved fiercely those things that mattered most to him. He was known as a selfless leader, for his resiliency in life and as someone always willing to give back and do whatever it took to realize his dreams.

Matt was always very proud of the uniforms he wore. He was an avid fan of anything scuba diving related, Palatine High School Baseball, Iowa State Football, the Chicago Cubs and U.S. Army.

At the time of his passing, Matt was leading a technical diving charter to the USS Emmons – a dive site he had visited many times prior. Matt was passionate about diving and had earned instructor ratings from the Technical Diving International, Scuba Diving International, and the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. Matt was an elite diver and personally trained hundreds of divers and had thousands of dives under his belt. He loved the ocean and being under the water.

With his passing he leaves a sudden and irreplaceable void with his family, friends and communities of Palatine, Illinois and Okinawa, Japan. Matt was the best of us. He had a gift for sharing his passions with others and in doing so made the earth a better place.  The world will miss his smile and goofy laugh.

Matt was never one for sentiment or religiosity and will be remembered through a service on Saturday, February 15 at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 185 E Northwest Hwy, Palatine from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Matthew R. Morgan Memorial Baseball Scholarship fund which is being set up to honor Matt’s memory and his love of Palatine High School baseball.
