Sophie Alvarado died peacefully at age 89 on May 29, 2019. She was the devoted wife of Raul and the cherished mother of four daughters and sons-in-law. She was the loving grandmother of nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Sophie dedicated her life to raising her daughters and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a committed staff member of Mary Crane Nursery School and Day Care Center where she worked as a teacher assistant in the preschool and then, for many years, as the After School Program Coordinator for school-aged children. Sophie received an honorary Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from National-Louis University for her decades of service to children at Mary Crane. She received the “Good Neighbor Award” from the Chicago Housing Authority for her generous volunteering within the community while a resident of Lathrop Homes. Sophie also had been an active volunteer at St. Bonaventure Church when her daughters attended the parish school.

Sophie loved to dance and enjoyed listening to music. She was a life-long fan of Frank Sinatra since her teenage years. She had the opportunity to see him in concert several times and this was a highlight in her life. Sophie enjoyed traveling and had been to Mexico, Washington DC, and several states including Hawaii. She was an ardent collector of anything related to owls. She had a collection of owl knickknacks, pillows, ornaments, etc. in her home. Sophie’s favorite holiday was Halloween. Every year she would decorate her home and make a haunted house in the basement for her grandchildren. Her grandchildren loved baking cookies with her and always agreed that she made the best sloppy-joes.

Sophie was a “people person.” She always got along with and could engage in a conversation with anyone, no matter their race, religion or socio-economic background. People enjoyed being with her, especially children. She never hesitated to offer a helping hand to anyone who needed one.

Sophie will long be remembered by her family for her love of life, humor, energy, loving guidance, and being a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She will be forever in their hearts.
