William “Bill” Sheffield, 88, passed away Jan. 7. In his passing, he is reunited with his loving wife, Jean, whom he never stopped missing. He will be forever missed by his loving children, Cathy (Mike), Peg (Nic), Bill (Martha), Chris (Holly), Mark (Kathy), and the late Bobbie. A goofy and fun-loving grandpa, “Gramps,” and “Gpa” to Matt, Andrea, Kim, Scott, Stephanie, Diana, Justin, Allie, Nicolette, Alec, Mackenzie, and Michael. Blessed to be Great-Grandpa, “GGpa,” to 8 (and baby Laidlaw on the way), whose visits he so enjoyed: Norah, Maddy, Alex, Max, Anamaria, Eli, Nate, and Fitz. He was a wonderful, sweet man, greatly loved by all who met him, and leaves the legacy of a full and active life. He will be remembered most as able to fix anything, generous to a fault, willing to do anything for his family, always ready with a corny joke, and a refreshing vodka and cranberry juice in hand. He was the owner of Ashland-Addison Florist, taking over the business from his father in 1964. He grew the business, which still remains family-owned, until he retired in 1990. In retirement, he and Jean built their dream home in sunny Florida and filled it with love, happiness, and memories for the next 27 years. He was always “the flower guy,” making and bringing flowers to any family, friend, and party. His past three years were undoubtedly sustained and enriched by the staff and caregivers at Emerald Place in Glenview, whose love and care we are most deeply grateful for. To honor Bill and Jean, open your garage door, pull up a chair, have a drink and wave to your neighbors as they pass by. We will love and miss them forever. Visitation Monday January 11th from 3:00-7:00pm at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 185 E. Northwest Hwy., Palatine. Funeral Tuesday, January 12th at 11:00am at St. Theresa Church, 455 N. My prayers are with Bill's entire family. I got to know him and some of you at Emerald Place when I was able to visit my husband, Jim. Bill always had a smile and a kind word for us as we enjoyed some meals together at the "guys" table. I could tell what a kind and wonderful man he was. Prayers for him, too.
